音楽が生まれた瞬間を、写真で旅する——デニス・モリス展「Music + Life」アニエスベー京都BAL店＆渋谷店で同時開催

ロンドンのストリートからパリ、そして日本へ。
世界の音楽史を写してきた伝説の写真家、デニス・モリス（Dennis Morris）の展覧会『Music + Life』が、アニエスベー京都BAL店とアニエスベー渋谷店の2会場で同時開催されます。
まるで音が聴こえてくるようなポートレートが並ぶ空間は、音楽とファッション、そして人生そのものを感じる時間旅行のよう。

ロンドンの記憶から、今へとつながる写真たち

デニス・モリスは、若干11歳でボブ・マーリーに見出されたという伝説の写真家。
彼がカメラで追い続けたのは、ただのスターではなく“音楽が生まれる人間そのもの”でした。

2023年には『KYOTOGRAPHIE』のメインプログラムとしてアニエスベー協力のもと発表された写真展『Colored Black』が大きな話題に。
1960〜70年代のロンドンで育まれたブラック・ブリティッシュカルチャーを写し出したその作品群は、パリの〈ギャラリー・デュ・ジュール（Galerie du Jour）〉へと巡回し、世界的な注目を集めました。

『Music + Life』──音楽と生きる、ということ

今回の『Music + Life』展では、今年2月にパリ・ヨーロッパ写真美術館で発表された最新作を中心に展示。
ボブ・マーリー、リー・ペリー、セックス・ピストルズ、パティ・スミス、ザ・ストーン・ローゼズ、リアム・ギャラガー……
音楽史を彩る伝説たちの「ステージ上」と「誰も知らない舞台裏」が、デニス・モリスの視線でよみがえります。

レゲエのリズム、パンクの衝動、ステージ裏の静寂——
1枚1枚の写真が語るのは、音楽と共に生きた人々の「息づかい」。
それは同時に、アートとファッション、そして生き方そのものを問う作品でもあります。

Dennis Morris

デニス・モリスは、レンズを通して非凡な人物たちに深く迫る作品群を制作する英国人フォトグラファー。音楽シーンと密接な繋がりをもつモリスは、これまでにボブ・マーリーやセックス・ピストルズ、マリアンヌ・フェイスフルのアルバム『ブロークン・イングリッシュ』のカバー写真など、象徴的で印象的な写真作品を制作している。英国サウスオールにあるシーク教徒のコミュニティーの本質を写し出した作品は、後にイングリッシュ・ヘリテッジ（イングランドの歴史的建造物を保護する目的で英国政府により設立された組織）の買上コレクションとなった。作品集として『Bob Marley』、セックス・ピストルズの『A Rebel Life; The Bollocks』、1960～70年代の英国黒人文化を記録した『Growing Up Black』が出版されている。作品はこれまでに、今日美術館（北京）、ラフォーレミュージアム原宿（東京）、アルル国際写真フェスティバル（フランス）、フォトグラファーズギャラリー（ロンドン）、インスティテュート・オブ・コンテンポラリーアーツ（ロンドン）、テート・ブリテン（ロンドン）、メトロポリタン美術館（NY）、京都国際写真祭（日本）、ロックの殿堂（クリーブランド）など国際的に展示されている。

We are pleased to announce that Dennis Morris’s exhibition Music + Life will be held simultaneously at agnès b. Kyoto BAL and agnès b. Shibuya.

Dennis Morris presented Colored Black as part of the main programme of KYOTOGRAPHIE 2023, with the support of agnès b. The series of photographs captured life within London’s multicultural communities of the 1960s and 1970s, portraying the pride and resilience of Black British culture. The exhibition received wide acclaim and later travelled to Galerie du Jour in Paris.

This exhibition features a selection of works from Morris’s solo show Music + Life, held earlier this year at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, along with related pieces. Through moments captured on stage, backstage, and in intimate settings, Morris reveals the humanity of iconic musicians such as Bob Marley, Lee Perry, Sex Pistols, Patti Smith, The Stone Roses, and Liam Gallagher. Each portrait vividly conveys the energy of the places where music was born—from the rich rhythms of reggae to the rebellious spirit of punk—while reflecting the deep connection between the photographer and his subjects. Together, these images tell a powerful story of twentieth-century music and the human spirit behind it.

To coincide with the exhibition, Dennis Morris will visit Japan and hold book-signing events for his latest publication, Music + Life, at both venues.

Artist Profile

Dennis Morris

Born in 1960, British artist Dennis Morris has used his camera to produce an impressive body of work on extraordinary individuals. He took up photography at the age of 9, and at 11 had work published in the major British newspaper, the Daily Mirror. In 1974 he accompanied Bob Marley on his first UK tour.Closely associated with music, Morris has created many iconic and memorable images of musicians, including album covers for Bob Marley, the Sex Pistols, and Marianne Faithfull. His series of photographs capturing the essence of the Sikh community of Southall, England, has been acquired by British government’s English Heritage.Several books of his work have been published, including the photobooks Bob Marley: A Rebel Life and The Bollocks, on the Sex Pistols. His work has been exhibited around the world, including at Today Art Museum in Beijing; Laforet Museum in Tokyo; Arles Photography Festival in France; The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland; and The Photographers’ Gallery, The Institute of Contemporary Arts, and Tate Britain in London.
